This is a DeHavilland Otter loaded with three of our canoes and five of the crew ready for take of into the bush (the solo canoe was inside). The other plane we used was a DeHavilland Beaver, which our crew doctor and I flew in. That carried the fourth canoe. The flight in was a phenomenal start to a grand journey. Late in the day due to ... well.... I had been at the floatplane base in Shefferville QC on the Labrador border for four days prepping boats and killing black flies. When the Air Inuit flight from Montreal came in on this particular morning it was raining with low clouds. The other six members of my crew were aboard. Company at last, not to mention getting the expedition on the water! Well, the DeHavilland Dash 8 came in, skimmed the runway and took off..........into the clouds.....and didn't come back. Inside the tiny terminal building, the Innu girl at the desk told me that the plane had overshot the runway (duh) and was continuing on to Kuujjuaq! Just skipped the stop!! We got them back on a flight from Kuujjuaq that afternoon and the silve lining was a late afternoon into the evening flight low over the tundra on the way to the George River 150 miles north. Thunderheads and glorious light.
